Stephen A. Gerrard became wealthy and successful by using refrigerated rail cars to sell cantaloupe nationwide, becoming known as the "Cantaloupe King". He was born in Cherry Grove in 1860 and eventually lived in a mansion at 748 Betula Avenue in North Avondale. Gerrard died in 1936 after suffering a stroke.
